05/11/2019 The “macaw” group includes the largest and most brightly colored species of parrots. Some of them reach more than a meter in length. The plumage of these birds is bright yellow, red and blue. The flight of a flock of macaws over the rainforest of Central and South America (their homeland) is one of the most amazing sights that can be seen in nature.
From the beginning of the colonization of tropical America, European settlers hunted these birds in huge quantities, since their meat was valued as highly as that of partridges. Commercial hunting has caused the extinction of two species of macaws that previously lived on the Caribbean islands.
Since the 16th century, parrots have become popular in Europe as pets. The bird trade grew exponentially in the twentieth century. There were more and more people wanting to buy a macaw parrot every year. As a result, many breeds have become rare. But the rarer the species, the higher the price rose, so traders caught even the last birds in their natural habitat.
A striking example of this is the blue macaw, which is no longer found in nature. It is preserved only in zoos and private owners.
Short description
The exotic bird is native to Central and South America. Some species can be found in the east of Panama and Chile, in the forests of Peru, Brazil, and Venezuela. This is the most colorful, bright and largest parrot of the family. Some specimens reach 1 meter in length (including tail), their wingspan is within 40 cm, and their weight is 1 kg.
In natural wild conditions they live in flocks of up to 100 individuals. If we talk about living at home, then once you take such a bird, you can consider that the family has acquired a child who will never grow up. Constantly need attention. You need to play with them, keep them occupied with something all the time.
Exotic pets love affection just as much as cats. They can sit on a shoulder or lap for hours while their neck is scratched. They often take one of the owners as their mate. They are terribly jealous of their significant other when attention is paid to someone else. Moreover, both the one to whom he is jealous and the object of desire can suffer.
Attention! The macaw often reaches the age of 80-90 years and can easily outlive its owners.

A number of factors influence the formation of the price of a parrot:
- Availability of documents (legal status).
- Health status.

Purchasing rare birds at pet markets or from private individuals is somewhat risky. There are missing documents or you may encounter forgery. Live goods may be of poor quality. How much do finches cost?
Finches are not parrots, but birds from the weaver finches family.
The popularity of these tiny ornamental birds is not comparable to the popularity of budgerigars, but they also have their favorites. Fragile, miniature finches need special care and careful care. At home, zebra finches, Japanese finches, and rice finches are most often kept. Gould's finch looks original: like a toy, it is painted in different colors. The face mask, chest, belly, wings, neck - all these contrasting areas have clear boundaries. The beak of the finch is triangular, elongated, tightly closed. Body weight does not exceed 50 g, and size – 15 cm.
A small pet that is scary to handle doesn't have to cost a lot. 800-1500 rubles is how much a finch bird costs, according to private sellers, and this is quite reasonable. There is no such emotional impact from finches as from parrots. They cannot talk; instead of singing, only indistinct quacking is heard. You can pay a little more for a beautiful, healthy bird that brings joy and fills the house with ringing chirps.

How to teach to talk
The macaw parrot needs to be taught to talk from the very first days of its appearance in the house. Of course, you should give the bird a week to adapt to new conditions and people. It is advisable to train a macaw from birth, approximately from the 40th week after the chick is born. This will become much more difficult to do with age.
The macaw parrot should be taught new words once or several times a day, no more than 10-15 minutes each lesson. Longer training will tire the bird and all efforts will be nullified. Before you begin training, you need to establish contact, make friends and gain the trust of the macaw.
If a parrot is afraid and ignores its owners, it is unlikely that it will be possible to teach it anything. Therefore, first you need to let the bird get comfortable, pamper it with treats, and talk more. Perhaps tension in the macaw is caused by some external irritants, for example, bright lighting, loud sounds, sharp unusual smells. All provoking factors must be eliminated so that the bird can focus solely on communication.
Macaws do not like low male voices; they quickly remember words spoken by a woman or child. They perceive better speech that is delivered not monotonously, but brightly and emotionally. For this reason, parrots often easily remember obscene words. For a successfully completed task, the macaw should be rewarded with a kind word or a tasty treat.
Buying a parrot: how to choose the right bird and is it worth saving
Before deciding which parrot to buy, it is recommended to study the care and maintenance requirements. The most capricious are large individuals. In addition to special food and spacious enclosures, it is required to devote at least 6 hours of personal attention to the birds. It is advisable to play with your pet and train it. Otherwise, he begins to pluck the feathers on the chest, and later pecks at the skin until it bleeds. The disease lasts a long time and is difficult to treat.
The cost of parrots in a nursery is high, but the safety of birds and humans comes first.
To breed large and medium-sized parrots, a large area is needed for cages or aviaries with mandatory conditions for flight. Small parrots are less demanding. Therefore, it is better to start breeding with small individuals: wavy or lovebirds, the price of purchase and maintenance of which is optimal.
What can they hurt?
Like any other living creature, a macaw can get sick. The owner’s main task is to recognize the symptoms in time and seek help from a veterinarian.
Macaws can get sick:
- feather loss (due to stress, metabolic disorders, infection with ectoparasites);
- bacterial, viral and fungal infections;
- self-plucking of feathers on the chest (the reason may be physical inactivity or internal diseases, for example, pneumonia, pericarditis, cardio- or hepatomegaly);
- others.
The way to protect the macaw from diseases is to take care of their prevention. It consists of proper care, living conditions, nutrition and regimen, as well as timely vaccinations and routine examinations by a veterinarian.
Inca cockatoo
This type is one of the most expensive in the world. A distinctive feature is the color - white with a hint of pink. There is a pronounced crest on the head. The weight of an adult is usually about 800 grams, body length is up to 65 centimeters. With a caring owner, a bird can live for a very long time - up to 40 years. It is very difficult to meet a representative of the Inca cockatoo in the wild - most of them were caught by poachers.
The cost varies from 3 to 5 thousand dollars.
Keeping a macaw parrot at home
Pros:
- Another full-fledged family member will appear in the house. It's interesting, fun and cool.
- You will always have an interesting interlocutor.
- Macaws are good with children.
Minuses:
- You need to be prepared for the fact that there will be a lot of garbage in the house. And during molting there will be even more garbage.
- It is very difficult to find a competent ornithologist.
- Birds can carry many different infections. It is advisable to show the bird to a specialist after purchasing.
- Some people may be allergic to birds.
- Some parrots can scream very loudly.
Where to buy a parrot: nursery, market, pet store
Depending on the place of sale, prices for parrots vary significantly. The most expensive birds are sold by a nursery in which all the conditions for proper maintenance and breeding are met.
Advantages of a nursery or private breeder:
- the health of the chick is supported by the presence of official documentation;
- information about the place of birth and age of the bird is indicated on a non-removable ring;
- the hatchling is accustomed to humans, there is no fear of communication;
- certificate that the bird was caught and brought into the country legally.
In pet stores, sellers do not educate, they only provide normal care. For rare species of parrots, the cost is often too high.
Prices for individual species of birds are quite high, and maintenance takes a lot of time and requires material costs (cages made of durable material, large enclosures, special food).
It is most dangerous to buy poultry on the black market or through advertisements in the media. If the buyer is poorly versed in the external differences between species, he may purchase a completely different bird than he expected. There is a high probability of purchasing a bird with a weakened psyche or diseases contagious to humans. In addition, the demand for illegal goods stimulates poaching of endangered species.
If the documents confirming the origin of the bird are not presented in full, the seller is trying to deceive the buyer.
Reproduction in captivity
Birds will happily breed if they successfully choose a pair and are kept in spacious enclosures. The optimal size of the enclosure should be at least 2.5 meters in height, length and width. You need to install a sufficient number of perches in the aviary so that the bird can easily get to the feeders with food and water.
By the age of 4, parrots are ready to reproduce. About a month after the start of mating, which takes place several times a day, the female begins laying eggs. With the appearance of the first egg, she sits in the nest, where she spends the next 23-25 days. The male stays close.
The chicks appear without feathers, completely naked. On the sixth day, a downy coating forms on the body. After two weeks, the eyes open. On the 25th day, feather stumps appear on the wings. After three months they leave the nesting area.
Attention! During the period of breeding, you need to be careful. The bird can be unpredictable and aggressive, causing harm to humans.
Pink cockatoo
A very beautiful species of bird, there is a small crest on the head, but the color of the plumage, on the contrary, is defiantly bright. This species was bred artificially by breeders; in the wild, cockatoos are not as rich in color. Life expectancy can reach forty years, size - slightly less than half a meter, body weight up to 500 grams, and loves human attention. The price is slightly lower than other representatives of this list - about one and a half thousand dollars per bird.
