How much does a Corella parrot cost and how to care for it?

If you have already decided to have a parrot in your home, you need to know how to choose the right cockatiel in order to avoid problems with treating your pet in the future.

Cockatiels belong to the cockatoo family. They are often kept as pets. They have bright, beautiful plumage, they have a fancy crest on their head, this type of parrot attracts attention. The cockatiel can be tamed quickly and easily. They get along well with people and are sociable. They also get along well with other animals in the house.

If you are leaving home for a couple of days, you can easily leave your cockatiel alone. The main thing is to leave her enough food and water.

General questions and rules for purchasing a cockatiel

To begin with, you should immediately note that the cost of a cockatiel parrot, as a rule, depends on where you buy the bird - in a pet store, at home or from professional breeders, and also whether the bird is tame or not.

The highest price is offered for fosterlings and tame parrots, because in this case half the work has already been done for the future owner - the bird is accustomed to human hands and is not afraid of people. The average cost of such birds is about 6,000 rubles, but keep in mind that it depends on the region.

The next issue to consider is the age of the cockatiel. To make it easier to establish contact and communication with the bird, it is better to purchase a 2-3 month old chick. During this period, the baby begins to learn to fly, eat on his own, and no longer needs his parents - an excellent moment for taming a parrot. But be careful, some breeders may sell the bird before this time, just because a buyer has been found, and you may face the problem of feeding the baby and his longing for his parents. By the way, such birds should be sold cheaper.

Then decide which one you want - a male or a female. Here, too, the price may vary.

How to choose a cockatiel parrot

When choosing a parrot for home keeping, you need to know the characteristics of the cockatiel. Let's look at which parrot you need to choose:

  1. Young bird. When choosing a parrot, be sure to find out the age of the individual. For home keeping, you need to buy a young cockatiel, as it is easier to tame it than an adult. It is important to be able to independently distinguish a young parrot from an old one. Previously, we looked at how you can determine the age of a cockatiel.
  2. After molting. The sex and age of cockatiels are difficult to determine before the first molt, even for an experienced person. Only a specialist in this field can give a more accurate age. But, as a rule, they go to choose parrots on their own. Therefore, take a closer look at the parrot, check with the seller whether the parrot has already moulted.
  3. Healthy individual. The most important point when choosing a cockatiel. Pay attention to the plumage, beak, legs and general appearance. The chick may have feathers sticking out in different directions, as they are in the process of growing, there may be a bald patch on the head, there is nothing wrong with that. But if such signs are observed in an adult, this indicates a parrot illness. The beak and paws of a young cockatiel are smooth, without growths. The eyes are bright and black.
  4. Active. Watch the cockatiel for a while. Take a closer look at the most active individual. She will look at everything around her, move from one perch to another. If the cockatiel sits ruffled and does not pay attention to extraneous noises, perhaps she is sick; you should not choose such a parrot.
  5. Sociable. If there are other birds in the cage, they can communicate, sing, and preen each other's feathers. Also pay attention to the individual who will pay attention to you and become interested in you.
  6. Not shy. As a rule, birds offered for sale are not used to interacting with humans and are not domesticated. They stay apart. But you shouldn’t choose a parrot that is too shy. It will be difficult to tame such a cockatiel.
  7. Choose different genders from different parents. If you plan to get two parrots at once for further breeding, you should not buy them from the same litter. If you choose a parrot in a pet store, check their relationship. If you buy a parrot from breeders, they themselves will give recommendations on breeding and select individuals from different parents for you.

The nuances of purchasing a cockatiel at a pet store

The main advantage of buying a pet in a store is that you can do it quickly and in one place. You can immediately purchase a cage, special food, and the necessary accessories (toys, perches, drinking bowls, feeders). How much can a Corella parrot cost in a pet store? The price depends on the promotion of the store brand, the condition and age of the bird and can start from 3,000 rubles.

However, there are some disadvantages to such a purchase:

  • Sellers do not know or cannot determine the sex of a parrot. The same applies to the age of the bird.
  • They may sell you a sick bird. Remember, this is a business and the seller's goal is to get rid of the bird as quickly as possible. Be careful and first study the signs of a sick bird, the symptoms of dangerous and even contagious diseases.
  • Usually, stores sell far from tame birds. Often these are wild, untrained, aggressive and timid birds, with which you will have to tinker for a long time and be quite patient until you find contact with the bird.

Keeping a cockatiel at home

Keeping a cockatiel requires compliance with certain conditions. To feel well, a parrot needs warmth. In the room it is worth maintaining the air temperature at 20-25 °C with a humidity of about 70%.

The parrot also needs about 10-12 hours of daylight. In winter, it should be lengthened with the help of artificial lighting, otherwise the bird will be apathetic. If the length of daylight is longer than the recommended value, then the tame cockatiel will become aggressive.

Like other members of this family, the parrot is susceptible to strong odors. Therefore, to keep it, you should choose a room in which there is no smoking, no cooking, no use of cosmetics and perfumes.

On a note. In the wild, the cockatiel wakes up with the first rays of the sun and falls asleep at sunset. When kept at home, the bird lives in approximately the same regime. And so that he doesn’t wake everyone up early with his loud voice, you can calm the parrot if you cover the cage with thick material at night.

Arrangement of the cage

To keep a cockatiel at home, it is worth purchasing a spacious rectangular cage measuring 40 x 50 x 100 cm with a distance between the bars of no more than 19 mm. It is desirable that it be made of durable steel, have a reliable lock, several transverse rods and a pull-out tray.

Important! A cage with zinc or lead rods is not suitable for keeping a cockatiel. These materials release toxic substances, the inhalation of which can cost the bird its health or life.

In order for a cockatiel to feel no worse at home than in the wild, its cage must have:

  • bowls for different types of food;
  • toys;
  • drinking bowl;
  • perches;
  • debris screen;
  • mineral stone;
  • branches;
  • fruit holder.

Important! Toys for cockatiels should be durable and safe. You should not buy products made from low-quality plastic or glass for birds.

Parrots quickly get bored of being kept in the same environment. Therefore, it is worth periodically updating the cells. You can sometimes move perches, feeders and toys.

Care and feeding

Caring for a cockatiel is not at all difficult. The main thing is to wash the bird’s drinker and bowls every day, as well as promptly replace the filler and clean the cage. And so that a favorable environment for pathogenic microorganisms is not created in the parrot’s home, it should be disinfected weekly using special means.

Important! Disinfection of the cage should be carried out in the absence of the pet. Before you start cleaning, the bird should be transplanted to another house or released to fly.

When kept at home, the cockatiel may suffer from a lack of sunlight. To make the parrot feel comfortable, in the summer its cage should be taken out onto the balcony for at least half an hour a day. And in winter, the lack of ultraviolet radiation can be compensated with the help of a special lamp.

When keeping at home, it is important not only to keep the cage clean, but also to properly care for the cockatiel parrot. The bird loves bathing procedures very much. Therefore, it is worth periodically placing a bath of clean warm water in his cage.

Due to a sedentary lifestyle, when kept in captivity, a parrot may grow claws. Therefore, comprehensive care for cockatiels must include their haircut. Since one person is unlikely to be able to trim a bird’s claws, it is worth doing the manipulation together. Someone carefully but firmly holds the pet, while someone carefully tries to trim the claws. If a blood vessel is touched, you need to apply cotton wool with hydrogen peroxide to the wound.

In order for a parrot to stay healthy longer, it needs to be provided not only with proper care and maintenance at home, but also with balanced feeding.

For proper development, your cockatiel’s diet should include:

  • grains (millet, corn, hemp and canary seeds);
  • berries and fruits (cherry plum, peaches, pears, citrus fruits, plums and apples);
  • vegetables (broccoli, beets, cucumbers, carrots, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower);
  • greens (nettle, clover, dandelion, spinach and lettuce);
  • protein products (cottage cheese and boiled eggs);
  • branches of fruit trees;
  • vitamin supplements.

Occasionally, the cockatiel should be treated to legumes, nuts, sunflower seeds and wheat soaked in water.

Important! Any new product should be introduced gradually into the cockatiel’s diet. After all, even a tiny portion of unfamiliar food may result in an allergy or reaction from the gastrointestinal tract.

The entire set of vitamins for a cockatiel is contained in the food it eats. But during the period of molting and breeding, the bird should be given special supplements. It is better to buy vitamins for parrots in liquid form and drop them into water.

To ensure that your cockatiel only benefits from food, you should exclude the following foods from its diet:

  • mushrooms;
  • bakery products;
  • sweets;
  • smoked meats;
  • pickles;
  • canned food;
  • selected vegetables and fruits (onions, mangoes, avocados, papaya, persimmons and unripe tomatoes).

Education and training

Before you train a parrot, you need to tame it and teach it not to bite. To make the process of socialization of the cockatiel move faster, you should follow several recommendations:

  1. The bird needs to be given time to adapt. On average, a parrot gets used to new conditions in 1-3 days. During this period, the cockatiel should be reassured with a gentle voice and not disturbed without reason.
  2. The parrot needs attention. In order for your home cockatiel to get used to your hands more quickly, you should pet him more often, let him out of the cage and sit him on your finger.
  3. A parrot cannot be deprived of communication for a long time. If the owner does not have the opportunity to spend more time with the cockatiel, it is worth taking not one, but a couple of birds into the house.
  4. You can't scold a parrot. If the cockatiel has become aggressive, it is worth figuring out what provoked this behavior. Often a parrot begins to bite due to lack of care, illness or stress.

Cockatiels easily remember phrases and quickly master various tricks. To increase learning efficiency when training your parrot, you should use treats and verbal praise.

Lifespan and reproduction in captivity

With proper care and maintenance, cockatiels live 16-20 years. If the requirements for the living conditions of birds are not met, they develop the following health problems:

  • parasitic infestations;
  • salmonellosis;
  • psittacosis;
  • cold;
  • gastrointestinal diseases;
  • diseases of the skin, eyes and beak.

The birds reproduce well in captivity and are ready to reproduce from the age of 8 months. But in order for the chicks to be healthy and viable, it is worth choosing individuals older than 1.5 years for breeding. Before the start of the mating season, it is recommended to introduce more calcium and fortified feed into the diet of future parents.

Cockatiel chicks appear 2.5-3 weeks after laying eggs. They grow and develop quickly. So that parents have the opportunity to fully feed the chicks, their menu should be enriched with wet food. It is recommended to plant young animals no earlier than 3.5 months.

We purchase a parrot from a breeder

There are many more advantages here. Let's list:

  • You can see the bird's development from the moment it is born. If the breeder recorded this, he took a video, a photo, and stored it until the moment of sale. You can also have an idea about the living conditions of the parrot.
  • The likelihood of more accurate sex determination. Firstly, professional breeders have extensive experience in calculating the sex of a bird, and secondly, knowing the parents of the chick, you can use the genetic method to find out its sex.
  • Such birds are already tamed, especially if they were fed artificially. Breeders can show you what the bird can do.
  • The most important advantage is the opportunity to purchase parrots of rare colors, these are the so-called color mutations of birds.

The cost of a cockatiel from breeders is from 5,000 rubles and can reach 20,000 or more. It is impossible to say objectively why this depends, although breeders will definitely find an explanation for this, and maybe they are right.

What factors could influence such a high price? These could be social networks, where the parrot has its own channel, which is viewed by a large number of network users. This can be tests, sex determination using DNA analysis, and much more.

But here you also need to be vigilant; often ordinary resellers pose as the breeder, who know nothing at all about the bird, but skillfully embellish it. In this case, we recommend asking the seller to show any documents and the chick’s parents.

If you suddenly buy a bird from a breeder, but then change your mind, then know that, having agreed with the seller, you can return it back, but the breeder may require you to pay for tests on the bird, because it has already been at your home and is returning to the nursery, where there is more birds. This may be risky for others.

Buying a bird from someone else

This option has two advantages - affordable cost and a huge selection of birds. You can buy a cockatiel secondhand even for 2,000 rubles. Tempting! But what a high risk of stumbling upon sick and old birds. Some people even post photos of other birds (alien birds) online, but in reality the parrot may look different.

There are people who sell parrots in pairs, with all the necessary accessories, and even give them away for free, provided that you treat their beloved pets with care; perhaps something happened to the owners of the bird or they are leaving for another country. Situations are different. but do not forget about attentiveness and caution.

When to choose a cockatiel

In addition to age, gender and other characteristics, when choosing a parrot, it is important to consider the time at which you will look and select a cockatiel.

Parrots sleep on average 10-14 hours at night and can rest for a couple of hours during the day. Therefore, it is better to choose a parrot in the morning before lunch, when the parrots have already woken up and are especially active, or after lunch until the evening. That is, choose a time when cockatiels are at their peak activity so that you can observe the parrots and choose the young, healthy and most active bird.
