6 Best Green Parrots to Keep as Pets

Green is the dominant color in many species of parrots around the world, including those that are often kept as pets. If you spot a green parrot, you can identify the bird by size, feather pattern, and many other criteria. Some green parrots have extra bright colors mixed into their plumage, while others have more subtle markings. These birds are intelligent and full of personality and require a dedicated caregiver. If you're considering adopting a bird, here are eight popular green parrots to choose from.

Luxurious barraband parrot

It is also called barrabantine by another name. He lives in the eucalyptus forests of South-Eastern Australia. The body reaches 40 centimeters in length. The color of the main plumage is bright green, the throat and forehead are yellow.

In Europe and America it is often found at home. Speech abilities are below average. With proper organization of classes, he can learn to pronounce a few words, copy the sounds of other birds and domestic animals, and simple melodies.

Philippine cockatoo

Representative of the cockatoo species. Lives in the Philippine Islands. Prefers to live in the hollows of tall trees. Has a white color. The body length reaches 32 centimeters, and the weight reaches 300 grams. Has a high life expectancy - up to 50 years. Despite this, it is not of particular interest to most amateurs, since it is incapable of learning to talk.

Character and behavior

The white-crested alba cockatoo is a trusting and affectionate parrot. He begs for attention, follows his owner everywhere and loves to be hugged or gently stroked. Without communication and affection, the alba begins to wither, like a flower without moisture.

Despite its friendly nature, the white cockatoo can become aggressive. The parrot demonstrates its dissatisfaction with the help of outstretched wings and straightened crest. During short outbursts of anger, the alba cockatoo can be dangerous. When enraged, it can bite and cause serious injury.

The white cockatoo communicates with loud cries, and if the parrot is not trained, it will scream whenever it pleases. Alba also has the ability to onomatopoeize and can remember words.

Collared Parrot

One of the representatives of Barraband parrots. Lives in Australia. Height reaches 37-38 centimeters. Just like the rest of the squad, it is painted green. He loves to fly. Therefore, when kept at home, it requires equipment and a fairly spacious place to keep it, which not every amateur can afford.

Under natural conditions, these birds eat on the ground. When kept in captivity, they do this on the floor of a cage or enclosure. They first scatter food from the feeder, and over a fairly large distance. This means that bedding must be provided on the hard floor, and the area must be cleaned frequently.

Large

Now let's talk about the features that large parrots have, as well as what breeds of these birds there are. Large parrots are very exotic, bright, unusual, smart birds that will always attract attention. Proud and free in their natural environment, they are much more than the stereotypical pirate "accessory". These are individuals, with their own advantages and disadvantages, character and manners.

Gray Gray

The bird's homeland is Africa. This beauty has been tamed since time immemorial. The first mentions of Grays are found in the Bible. His intelligence and uncanny talent for speech reproduction are amazing. With proper care, Grays live on average 50 years; there are even 75-year-old centenarians.

Of all the variety of species that exist in the world, gray African Grays are the most capricious. It is difficult to predict how a bird will treat its owner. They can either love with all their hearts or demonstrably ignore any attempts by a person to build a relationship with him.

Bird muscles need constant training. Therefore, when keeping a Gray Gray in captivity, he needs to spend several hours a day outside the cage. This way he can maintain good physical shape.

Macaw

This intelligent and majestic bird has been one of the most popular parrots for many years. Macaws have much more to offer than good looks. They are full of character. They live in large flocks throughout Central and South America. They live about 30 years.

In captivity they love to spend time outside the cage, following on the heels of their owner. They have a loud hoarse voice. They love to show it off. They are easy to train and train.

Amazon

Amazons have predominantly green plumage. These birds are real announcers and singers. They love to vocalize and do it very loudly. As Amazons reach puberty, they become aggressive. When keeping them at home, you should not let the birds out of the cage during this period.

Amazons always independently choose their favorite family member and ignore the rest. It is better to have a young chick. It is very difficult for adult individuals to adapt to captivity conditions. Being depressed about this, they refuse food and water and may die from dehydration. In comfortable conditions, birds live up to 50–55 years.

Cockatoo

Many have seen a white parrot with a tuft, but not everyone knows the name of the breed. This is a cockatoo.

The cockatoo really stands out among its fellows with its magnificent crest, which often has a yellow or orange spot on it. Its sizes range from medium to large. The cockatoo is a very sociable member of the parrot family. His obsession is boundless - he always strives to be among people, in the center of events. This desire should be limited, otherwise he will demand attention with loud, prolonged screams, no matter what the owner is doing. Life with a cockatoo is often compared to life with a two-year-old child. These undeniably intelligent creatures are so emotional and prone to hysterics.

The usual diet of cockatoos consists of berries, fruits, vegetables, and grains. The cages for keeping them must be very durable, equipped with toys, ladders, rings and other items for entertainment.

Alexandrian

An adult reaches a length of about 60 cm. Such parrots live in India. A healthy pet can live in captivity for almost 40 years.

These birds need to follow a strict diet:

  • fresh vegetables;
  • leafy greens;
  • cereals;
  • nuts;
  • balanced food for large parrots.

Small parrot-vase

Under natural conditions, these birds live on the islands of the Indian Ocean - Madagascar and the Seychelles archipelago. Their height reaches 36 centimeters and their weight is 315 grams. They have a characteristic black-brown color. During the day they break up into racks of 10-15 individuals, and towards night they gather in large groups of up to 200 individuals. Despite the fact that in the wild they are very cautious and do not let people get close, at home they make contact quite easily and are amenable to training. But to achieve results, you need to work with them constantly.

Speakers

One of the cutest things about parrots for many people is their ability to speak or imitate noises. It is for this reason that these birds are often used as pets.

Eclectus

Eclectus was first discovered in the Solomon Islands. This is the most caring, gentle and calm of the large breeds of parrots. Birds are very friendly to children. Not aggressive. The diet includes foods high in fiber. It is unacceptable to feed them fatty foods. Very capable of learning. Vocabulary can be more than 100 words.

Estimated lifespan is 40 years. The weight of an adult male reaches 500 grams.

Laurie

One of the most beautiful and colorful birds is the loris. Loris breeders know that, in addition to beauty, these individuals are distinguished by sloppiness. You need to be prepared for this.

Excellent trainability. Their vocabulary can be around 70 words. Lories do not like to be in silence. If you can’t spend time with your pet, just turn on the radio or TV.

Others

The vocabulary of talking parrots differs significantly from each other.

Approximate vocabulary by type:

  • Gray Gray – 350-400 words;
  • Amazon – 50-60 words;
  • ara – 20-30 words;
  • cockatoo – 10 words;
  • lovebirds – 15 words;
  • rosella – 10;
  • tiger parrot – 20-30 words;
  • cockatiel – 10;
  • budgerigars – 100-150 words.

Congo parakeet

These African parrots are found in the western and central parts of the continent. Their physical characteristics are as follows:

  • Body length up to 29 centimeters.
  • The main color is green.

They are divided into three types - large, small and black-winged.

Can be successfully kept in captivity. They copy the sounds of other birds and animals and musical melodies well. The ability to reproduce the human voice is usually poorly developed. But some birds, after persistent and regular training, had a vocabulary comparable to gray parrots. This is especially true for individuals born in captivity.

Woodpecker parrots

The smallest representatives of the family. They live in the tropical forests of the island of New Guinea. Their size does not exceed 10 centimeters in length. They can be distinguished from other small birds by their strongly curved beak.

It is very difficult to keep them in captivity, since they:

  • They love to fly and cannot stand being in a cage for long periods of time.
  • They need special food, the basis of which should not be grain mixtures, but fruits and berries.

Parrot as a pet

Parrots are social birds that do not tolerate loneliness well. Without communication, they can become depressed, get sick, and even die. Therefore, those who just want to observe the behavior of birds from the outside are recommended to get a couple of birds. This way, pet parrots will begin to communicate with each other and will not need much attention from the owner.

Those who want a bird to learn to speak are recommended to get one individual. Deprived of communication with its own kind, a feathered pet will be more interested in the attention of its owner and will quickly expand its vocabulary.

When deciding to get a parrot (budgie, lovebird, gray parrot or any other), you need to be prepared for the fact that you will have to spend time cleaning in and around the cage, put up with the noise it makes and be prepared for the inevitability of repeated repairs.

In return for these troubles, you can get an interesting and sociable companion who can relieve stress with his funny pranks.

Corella

Parrots are very popular among amateurs due to their unpretentiousness and ability to learn speech. In natural conditions they live in Australia. Their main color is dark gray. The cheeks, forehead and crest are yellow. It is the crest with its long feathers that distinguishes the beauty of the cockatiel among other parrots. Their weight reaches 100 grams and their length is 33 centimeters.

Cockatiels are characterized by mutations. Therefore, many birds have a color different from the main one. Pearl cockatiels look especially attractive.

Coral

Pearl, otherwise pearl cockatiels are characterized by an attractive pattern on the wings and back. It is formed due to light spots. It is these spots of different sizes that form a bizarre composition, so beloved by many connoisseurs of parrots.

Green-cheeked red-tailed parrot

Under natural conditions, these birds live in Brazil, Bolivia and Argentina. Their colors consist of dark gray-green tones. Height reaches about 25 cm, and weight up to 70 grams. Quite often found among home breeders. This is due to their playful and gentle nature, as well as quite good intellectual abilities. They can learn to pronounce some words.

What types are there

There are more than 30 species in the toucan family, of which the most famous is the great toucan, also known as toco, and such representatives of the bright family as:

Types of toucans

  • white-breasted;
  • yellowthroat;
  • blue-faced;
  • ariel;
  • lemon-breasted;
  • choco;
  • red-breasted.

As you can see, they mainly get their name from the color of their plumage.

These birds are mountain, forest, and plain.

Budgerigar

Perhaps the most common feathered pet among home lovers. Its popularity is due to objective reasons:

  • Unpretentiousness in content. Even a child can handle the care.
  • Good abilities. A budgie can learn up to 150 words.
  • Pleasant character.
  • Relatively cheap, especially in comparison with exotic birds.

The average height is 17-20 centimeters, body weight 40-45 grams. The main color is grass green. Life expectancy at home on average reaches 10-15 years.

Macaw

According to many, these are not only the largest (up to 95 centimeters in height) but also the most beautiful parrots in the world. They live in South America. Their colors are stunningly bright and consist of red, yellow, green and blue tones. At home, they are very rare, because:

  • They are very expensive.
  • They require spacious cages and enclosures.
  • They have a complex character.

Yellow-cheeked rosella

Author: © Luke Durkin / flickr

The smallest bird of the genus Rosella has settled in the southern part of Australia and the islands closest to the continent.

The birds have bright red, green and black colors. There are bright yellow spots on the cheeks, which gave the small parrot its name.

Swarms of yellow-cheeked rosellas are a real disaster for local farmers. But, despite the harm caused by beautiful birds, people do not persecute them.

9

Kalita or monk parrot

The bird got its name due to the similarity of its color to the cassock of Capuchin monks. Its plumage is green, and its breast has a special, pale greenish-gray color, with green stripes crossing it. It lives in the countries of South America - Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia. Its weight reaches 100 grams, and its height is 30 cm.

Kalitas are very active, sociable and inquisitive. They get along well with people when kept at home. They learn to speak relatively well. Their vocabulary reaches 100-200 words. But these parrots scream very often and loudly, which can cause serious inconvenience.

Small and medium breeds of parrots

Small and friendly budgies

The most popular parrots in Russia and in the world. The size of adult wavyfish is from 16 to 20 cm, and they weigh up to 50 grams. They live for about 10 years, but everything is individual - in rare cases they can live up to 25 years. The main reason for its popularity is low cost with high intelligence, and the ability to teach a parrot to speak. The main (natural) color is green, but there are other, sometimes bizarre colors:

Corella (Nymph) - features and varieties of the breed

A little more expensive, a little smarter and more budgies are Corella parrots, or, as they are also called, nymphs. They rightfully occupy second place in popularity among other breeds of domestic parrots. They can be considered one of the most tame parrots. Average life expectancy is 20 years. The size of an adult nymph reaches 32-34 cm including the tail. They weigh on average 90 grams. An attractive feature of the cockatiel is its crest, which is why it is also called the crested parrot. Colors may vary, but the most common are gray body, yellow head and crest, and orange cheeks. You can read more about the conditions of keeping this bird in the article Corella Parrot: care and maintenance at home.

The friendliest breed of parrots are lovebirds

It is not for nothing that lovebirds received such a name: in the wild they live in pairs, are distinguished by a special display of tenderness towards each other and are constantly located close to each other - even when searching for food or materials for a nest, the female flies away not far from the male, and is within earshot. Yes, it’s a female, because matriarchy prevails among these birds. However, you should not think that lovebirds will be just as nice to you - at the same time, these birds are one of the most aggressive and impudent parrots. As a rule, they cannot tolerate other pets at all. If you have acquired a pair of untamed lovebirds, it is unlikely that you will ever be able to tame them - they are quite content with each other’s company.

These are small parrots, reaching only 17 cm in size. But, unlike budgerigars, they have a smaller tail, and most of the body is the body. Lovebirds have a curious character; they definitely need to explore everything and test their beak. They are reluctant to talk and can learn up to 10 words. If you have such a pet without a mate, you must pay a lot of attention to it, otherwise the bird will experience frequent stress. You can find out how to diversify your feathered friend’s leisure time in the material Do-it-yourself toys for parrots.

From the photograph you can see that these birds have a lot of colors.

Song breed of Rosella parrots

Not the best choice if you want to get a talking parrot. But, unlike the same grays and macaws, the voice is very pleasant and melodic - rosellas love to hum melodies, and they do it beautifully and with expression. They are distinguished by a calm disposition and friendliness towards people. However, you should not put other types of parrots in their cage; rosellas are intolerant of such neighbors and will most likely get into a fight.

Rosella has a medium size (from 20 to 30 cm), a small beak and bright plumage of a variety of colors. They are also divided into subspecies based on color.

Tamed parrot Amazon

If you want a talking and smart parrot, but the macaw is too expensive and big, and the gray is not very beautiful, there is an excellent option: the Amazon parrot. In terms of their ability to learn words, these birds take second place. In addition to words, they can repeat anything: from the sounds of various animals to playing the violin. Moreover, a characteristic and amazing ability is to reproduce sounds taking into account intonation and, as they say, “on topic”.

Amazon is very easy to tame, because the history of their “friendship” with humans has been going on for a long time. By the way, it is believed that traditionally they sit on the shoulders of pirates. These birds are very cute and friendly, they can become a reliable friend and participant in all everyday activities.

Amazons reach an average size of 30 cm, but there are species up to 45 cm. Life expectancy is up to 50 years. To maintain a house, it is important to provide suitable conditions: it is not recommended to lower the temperature below 18 degrees, and the air humidity should be within 60-90%. Still, we should not forget that these parrots originally lived in the tropics. Amazon parrot subspecies in photographs:

Monk (Kalita) - European pigeon

Another species of talking parrots that is highly trainable and gets along well with humans. In Russia they are just gaining popularity when, for example, in Brazil or Spain they are considered “city” birds: like our pigeons, they live among people. Moreover, they often try to get rid of them, since they cause significant harm to agricultural fields.

Their name monk comes from the similarity of color with the cassock: green back, tail, upper part of the head and light lower head and body. By nature they are impudent, curious, playful. One of my favorite hobbies is storing all the small things I find somewhere in a secret place. Hand training is quite easy, especially if tamed from childhood. They can remember several dozen words, but the voice is hoarse and not very pleasant, which is why not everyone will want to buy such a bird. See the photo for the most common colors of monk parrots:

True parrots (tribe)

This tribe of birds is very numerous. It has more than 70 genera. Its representatives live in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. The most famous tribes among bird lovers include:

  • Red-winged parrots. They include two species - Timor redwings and common redwings. Body length reaches 33 centimeters. They got their name due to the red color of the front part of the wings. Popular with collectors.
  • Royal. They include three species - amboinsky, yellow-shouldered and king parrots themselves. The back and wings of these birds are green, and the breast is red. Due to their beauty, they can often be found in poultry houses. They are relatively easy to learn, but rarely master human speech.
  • Luxurious. Also included are three species, of which the most popular among home breeders is the luxurious mountain parrot. Its color scheme is characterized by an overwhelming predominance of bright yellow shades. Birds grow up to 40 centimeters. They can often be found in captivity. They tolerate low temperatures well, so in regions where there are no severe frosts, it is preferable to keep them in outdoor enclosures. Birds scream often and loudly, which sometimes causes inconvenience.

Circus and toucans

The extraordinary abilities of a parrot with a large bright beak allow it to perform in the circus as an artist. A bird can make interesting sounds, repeat simple phrases, and imitate the voices of other animals. Also in the circus arena, toucans can count objects and draw a picture.

Adults and children love performances with the small nosed bird, and its colorful plumage delights the public. This view is simply interesting to watch from the outside. It will be a decoration for any home and a good friend for its owner, which is why the bird is popular with poultry breeders.

Ruffled parrot

It is one of the most popular parrot species among home breeders due to its beautiful appearance and ability to reproduce human speech. In natural conditions, it lives in the countries of Africa and South Asia. Often lives near people. The main color of the coloring is green. Adult birds are up to 42 centimeters tall and their weight reaches 140 grams.

Jumping parrots

A genus, numerous representatives of which live in Australia, New Zealand and nearby islands. There are 10 types. Its representatives are otherwise called kakariki. Their main color is green. They prefer to settle in the lower tier of the forest and look for food on the ground. They are frequent inhabitants of apartment cages and enclosures. They sing very well and are well tamed, but teaching them to pronounce simple words can only be done with great difficulty.

Noble green-red parrot

In the wild it is found in northern Australia, the Moluccas and Solomon Islands, and New Guinea. A very beautiful bird. Characterized by a sharp difference in the color scheme of males and females. Boys' main color is green, while girls' main color is cherry-red. Due to their aesthetic appearance, they are popular among lovers of feathered pets. They have a calm, even phlegmatic character. In captivity, life expectancy can reach 40-50 years. They are relatively well tamed, but extremely rarely master the ability to pronounce words.

Ribbon parrot

Representatives of this species are otherwise called tiger parrots. They live in New Guinea and Indonesia. This species has 4 subspecies. The maximum body length of these birds varies from 12 to 23 centimeters, and weight from 90 to 150 grams. Their main color is green, with characteristic black stripes on the back. Thanks to them, they were nicknamed tiger.

These birds are rarely found in apartment conditions. The reason for this is objective - the average life expectancy in captivity is no more than 3 months. They cannot reproduce in a cage or enclosure. Scientists have not yet been able to determine the cause of these phenomena.

Jaco

The gray parrot is considered the most gifted bird. These birds are very talented talkers who can memorize more than 200 words, long phrases and memorize entire melodies.

In nature, this species lives mainly in West Africa. The bird is medium in size, 35-40 cm in length. The plumage is gray.

Gray parrots

The character is quite meek. They make loyal friends and companions. The attachment to the owner is so strong that the gray parrot may not survive separation from him.

They reproduce poorly in captivity. They are rarely kept in pairs due to the difficulty of determining the sex of the bird.

fan parrot

Its natural habitat is the northern part of Latin America. The bird's height reaches 35 centimeters. The plumage is green. The breast is dark red, with pale blue splashes. Well suited for home maintenance thanks to:

  • Calm character.
  • Attachment to people and the possibility of quick taming.
  • High life expectancy in captivity, which reaches up to 40 years.

Average

Medium-sized parrots are more playful, intelligent and inquisitive than their smaller counterparts. They are impressive and quite easy to train and train. Therefore, their popularity among breeders is growing every year. We present to your attention a description of the most popular types below.

Corella

This unusual bird with a mischievous crest belongs to the cockatoo family. Her homeland is Australia. In their natural environment, cockatiels live near bodies of water. It is very important for them to be able to swim in water. Those who have birds living in captivity also need to take care of the possibility of swimming.

There are more than 10 subspecies of cockatiels, differing in color. Only their budgies can compete with them in the variety of colors (there are more than 30 varieties of budgies). Corella is very friendly. Gets along easily with other parrots. Needs constant communication, the touch of his best friend - the owner.

Rosella

Rosella is amazingly beautiful. Her rainbow plumage leaves no one indifferent. A freedom-loving and strong bird native to Australia. Suitable for keeping at home, but she will need special conditions.

Features of rosella content:

  • a spacious cage or enclosure, at least 4 m long and about 2 m high;
  • special nutrition, including food of animal origin;
  • constant attention - rosellas are very jealous and can show aggression towards everyone except the owner.

Rosellas are quite difficult to adapt to captivity. It is almost impossible to teach them to talk. They are better able to reproduce melodies and song motifs. Life expectancy is about 20 years.

Lorikeets

The habitat of numerous representatives of this genus is Australia and the islands of Oceania. There are 7 types. Of these, collectors liked the colorful lorikeets the most. They are characterized by bright, multi-colored colors. This is due to the fact that parrots feed on the nectar of flowers and with such colors it is easier for them to camouflage themselves from enemies.

At home, the piercing, creaky cries of these parrots sometimes cause inconvenience. There is only one way out of the situation - to teach your pet to speak as soon as possible. A lorikeet can remember up to 70 words.

They love to fly. They feel bad in cramped conditions. Therefore, the cage must be spacious. But the best solution would be to equip an enclosure.

The most decorative

Of the variety of species of these amazing birds, it is difficult to single out those that are particularly beautiful and graceful. Therefore, the division is rather arbitrary. But still, there are several breeds that can charm even the most sophisticated bird connoisseurs with their attractiveness.

Ozherelovy

The main color of these parrots is light, pastel green. Other colors have also been bred through selection, so you can often see white birds of this species or rainbow ones on sale. But the familiar necklace parrots have precisely the light green color of their feathers. Africa is considered the homeland of this species. Life expectancy is 20 – 30 years. How long a pet will live will depend on the conditions in which it is found.

It is considered a dimorphic species. Adult males have pink or black ring-shaped throat marks around their necks, while females do not have rings. Parrots are unpretentious in care and maintenance at home. There are only a few mandatory conditions that need to be met.

These are:

  • cleaning the cage 2 times a week;
  • balanced diet;
  • daily washing of dishes from which the parrot takes food;
  • the ability to fly short distances;
  • communication with the owner.

On the last point, we can add that necklace parrots can be taught to speak. They willingly copy their owner's vocal habits, intonation and timbre. But representatives of this breed have a loud, ringing and rather harsh voice, so speech exercises do not always please its owner.

Collar

Having a green-blue color of feathers, parrots of this species are distinguished by a bright yellow “collar” around the neck. They were first discovered in Australia. The bird is very dynamic and freedom-loving. Parrots are great for keeping at home in a spacious enclosure - they simply need active flight. It is worth knowing that destroying a wooden enclosure will not be difficult for the winged beauty.

The diet of feathered pets should be varied:

  • insects and their larvae;
  • plants' seeds;
  • cereals;
  • vegetables;
  • fruits.

Average life expectancy is 30 years. The collared parrot easily learns spoken language, but only up to three years of age. If the bird is older, then training is practically useless.

Mountain

The luxurious mountain parrot is distinguished by its extraordinary ingenuity. In their natural environment, they make their nests on ledges and in small caves of Australian rocks. Hence the name. The plumage of males is lemon yellow, and that of females is olive.

The mountain parrot has a loud voice. He screams often and shrilly, this is worth remembering when deciding to keep him at home. This bird needs to fly a lot to maintain physical health. Therefore, the cage for a captive bird should be spacious. They do not get along well in the same cage with representatives of other species. Sharing should be avoided. Unpretentious in nutrition. You can teach them to talk, but they are more amenable to training. These birds are real acrobats.

Aratinga

This genus includes 22 species of birds living in Latin America. All of them are relatively small in size - 25-35 centimeters in length. They have a very beautiful color. But the main reason for the popularity of arating among poultry keepers is not in it, but in the character of these birds.

They are very sociable and friendly. They willingly come into contact with all members of the owner’s family. Often people choose their favorite and become very attached to it.

They reproduce musical melodies well. They remember words quite poorly. Their vocabulary includes no more than 20 words.

The highlight of these birds is that they can learn to dance. They do this so touchingly that they cause friendly laughter from the whole family and its guests.

Description of the species

Toucans are distinguished primarily by their unusually long and multi-colored beak. They look massive, but if you pick up this 50 cm long creature (and almost half the length is occupied by the beak), you will be surprised at its almost weightlessness: the weight is about 300 g. The illusion of massiveness is created by the size of the beak - although it is hollow and very easy.

These birds are tightly built, short-tailed, with a small head and a muscular neck (try otherwise, they use their beaks like a tower crane operator). With the help of the “nose”, toucans not only feed and organize their lives: it is also a heat-exchange organ, a method of identification in a flock, and a formidable argument in a dispute with opponents. You can also determine the age of the bird: in young birds that feed from the generosity of their parents, the lower part of the beak protrudes forward - so that nothing from the parent’s beak flies past.

Description of the toucan parrot

To paint a portrait of this bird, for the beak alone, an extensive palette would be needed, which must include all shades of red and orange, yellow and bright green, blue, burgundy and light green. As for the rest, they must be chocolate and black (blue-black), this is the main color of the plumage of the body, and white for the breast.

It is almost impossible for any ornithologist to distinguish males from females, with the exception of the arasari species - they have sexual differences in color.

Toucans are blue-eyed and have very bright irises. All together creates an indescribable atmosphere of festivity.

These birds fly poorly (the beak spoils the aerodynamics), and they rarely need flights: there is usually plenty of food in their habitats, so there is no need to migrate in search of a new food base. But their paws are designed in such a way that they tenaciously grasp branches with strong fingers and can jump along them in any direction in order to eat the maximum amount of useful things on one tree.

Kea

Kea mountain parrots live in New Zealand. These are the only members of the family capable of reproducing and living at an altitude of 1500 meters or more. In wild conditions they often strive to live near people, whom they are often not at all afraid of. They are extremely inquisitive. In captivity, they are very well tamed and quickly get used to humans.

How many species of parrots are there in the world? More than 300. The article reflects information about only some of them. When choosing a feathered pet, you should study in more detail information about its biological species and recommendations for keeping it at home. If the lover follows the rules, the pet will turn into a devoted friend and will decorate the house for a long time.

Reproduction

Before the female lays her eggs, a pair of birds formed during the mating season must first take care of finding a suitable nest. In this case, their choice most often falls on hollows located at the very tops of trees. Thus, birds probably protect themselves from uninvited guests and predators.

At the same time, you may be surprised to learn that sometimes the hollow chosen by a parrot can be located at an altitude of about thirty meters. It is there that the females set up a nesting house for themselves. Moreover, this procedure can last up to a month, during which she will not move far from her home.
